Nike Expotique Recap

5

On Friday, after we dropped off our bags at the hotel, we headed over to Georgetown to get our official race merchandise and to visit the tents that the Expotique was located in.

We stopped by the store first to get our merchandise because we were afraid our sizes might sell out. As soon as we stepped into Nike Georgetown, I felt like I was in heaven! There was Nike apparel galore, We Run DC signs, and the staff was really upbeat and friendly. They told us to head upstairs to look at the race merchandise, so we sprinted upstairs to get our hands on the merchandise we had been oggling at online.

11

For some reason, I felt like I was on Super Market Sweep, and I felt anxious and frantic to get all of the things I wanted! (We went at a good time though and there was plenty of merchandise so there was really no need to be in such a rush! haha) So, I went over to one section of the store and grabbed a white aluminum water bottle with the race logo on it, a black running tank, headband, and the cutest socks made especially for the race. I looked around the store a bit more, and decided that I also wanted to buy the bright neon-yellow tank to wear for race day. I had brought a black Nike running tank to wear, but I thought this one would better match my leggings and wouldn’t be as hot.

unnamed

Kathleen and Phu also browsed around the store and picked up their loot. Kathleen got the Nike bag, socks, and zip-up hoodie, while Phu got the socks, headband, quarter-zip long-sleeve running shirt, and the same black tank that I got. I think we all wanted to get a lot more, but we had to put some sort of limit on our spending!

The lines at the store were quick and we really didn’t have to wait at all. This was surprising (in a good way) because Kathleen had read that people had to wait in long lines last year to buy their merchandise, but we had no problems at all.

1

After spending too much money, we headed over to the Expotique. I had been looking forward to the Expotique because I had heard that it would be quite different from any race expo I had been to. And it was different for sure, just not sure that it was different in a good way.

There were many different tents that made up the Expotique. The first one we went to was where we got to pick up our packet and race bibs. This had no lines at all, and I walked right up to a computer, showed my ID and confirmation code, and quickly received my packet and bib number.

Next, we headed over to the main Expotique tent. When you walked in there were giant screens and names with inspirational messages were popping up all over. When I first saw it I thought that it must just be randomly putting up names of people that are in the race. But no! It was much cooler than this. Somehow, when you stepped on the mat in front of the screen there was a sensor that read your name based on your race bib. So the names that were popping up on the screen were the actual names of the people standing around the screens! It would only be for a few seconds that your name would be up there, but this was definitely an awesome part of the Expo!

4

Then we walked over to the Nuun bar, which I found out is pronounced “noon” and not “nun” like I had previously thought it was! I’m not a huge fan of Nuun, I think the taste is just ok, but I am not an aficionado or anything! But I did enjoy sampling the different flavors, and I was surprised to discover that I actually really enjoyed the Nuun energy flavors! They had a stronger flavor than the regular Nuun, and the taste reminded me of Gatorade.  I will definitely be buying the Nuun energy tablets in the future!

3

After the Nuun bar, there was an area sponsored by Luna Bar where you could make race signs. We all decided to skip that part because we were obviously running in the race and wouldn’t be able to hold up a sign during it! I did enjoy the Luna Bar samples though (I got two!) that were being passed around, especially since I have been eating them pretty regularly along with my training. I really can’t tell you enough how much I love the regular Luna Bars, and I also love the Luna protein bars which really taste as good as a candy bar!

4

Past the Luna station was the Paul Mitchell Hair station. They had a poster with 4 different types of hairdo’s that you could get at this station free of charge. The one problem was, there was a waiting list to actually get your hair done. The next appointment wasn’t available until about 1.5 hours later, so we decided to skip this. It didn’t really even matter because race day wasn’t until 2 days later, so it’s not like we would have kept our hair style in until then.

The next part of the Expotique was a giant wall where you could sign your name or write messages on. We all signed our names, and then was surprised to see that the Expotique was all over! There were no other stations, and we really went through the whole thing quite quickly. We all left feeling underwhelmed and it definitely did not live up to all the hype! While some things in the Expotique were different and interesting, all in all there just wasn’t much to it so we were disappointed. I felt bad for Kathleen’s friend Brandon who is a fellow runner and wanted to come check out the expo, because there was really nothing for him to do at the Expo.

When we got out of the Expotique, we went to get our picture in front of the “We Run DC” sign. Then we headed to the We Run DC wall and found our names (this wall has the names of all the people participating in the race).

Weekly Recap (Kathleen) and Our Friday in DC!

The race that I’ve been waiting for since December 2nd is finally here and over 😦 The Nike Women’s Half Marathon in Washington DC was a great experience! The weather was perfect, the course was flat (no hills), and I pushed myself to the limit to get a PR 🙂

Here is my weekly recap:

Monday, April 21st: Rest Day

Tuesday, April 22nd: Yoga (75 minute class)

Wednesday, April 23rd: 2 miles running (10:24 pace)

Thursday, April 24th: Rest Day—Foam Rolled and Stretched

Friday, April 25th: Walking around DC!

Saturday, April 26th: Walking around DC!

Sunday, April 27th: 13.1 miles running at the Nike Women’s Half Marathon (pace to be announced this week—but I was under my goal of 2:20 🙂 )

We arrived in Washington DC on Friday. Lauren arrived about 20 minutes before Phu (Lauren’s friend who was also running in the race) and I. One of my friends from college, Brandon, graciously offered to pick us up from the airport on Friday, take us to our hotel, and then led us around the Expotique (Expotique recap will be coming tomorrow).

Our hotel was within walking distance from the Georgetown area which was where the Nike store and the Expotique were being held. This was the sign lit up on the floor of our hotel welcoming the runners:

After we explored the Exotique and the store, we were hungry after our traveling and walking and we headed for lunch at Burger Tap Shake (BTS). We all had a $6 chuck and it was a pretty good burger so we all were very satisfied with our choice :).

On our way back to our hotel, we stopped at Georgetown Cupcakes (also known as the TLC Show DC Cupcakes). Here are some of the goodies we got:

We all tried the "Cherry Blossom" cupcake...so delicious!

Me back at the hotel...eating another cupcake that I brought back :)

Then, we headed back to our hotel to unpack our goodies and grab a nap. Poor Phu had been up all night doing homework, so when her head hit the pillow.. she was fast asleep. I was also exhausted and Lauren may or may not have gotten a good black mail photo to use of me someday sleeping…haha.

After our nap time and relaxation, we decided to venture out for some food. We went to Piola for some pizza which was pretty close to our hotel. We all enjoyed our pizza!

After dinner, we headed to Dupont Circle to a bar to meet up with another college friend, Darren, who was in town for a few days. It was nice to catch up with him, but we only stayed an hour because we were exhausted and knew that we would need all the sleep we could get!

Our first day in DC was great! Tune in the rest of the week to hear about the Expotique, the race, and other fun things we did in Washington DC!

Spoiler Alert! + Weekly Recap – Lauren

We are resting, recovering, and putting together our recaps of our big DC weekend, but I will let you in on a little spoiler – we both got PR’s! It was a beautiful day to run, a great race organized by Nike, and an overall positive experience. But much more on that coming later in the week!

Here was a recap of my week leading up to the race:

Monday, April 21st: 3.7 miles running

Tuesday, April 22nd: 7 miles running, Barre fitness class

Wednesday, April 23rd: 2.5 miles running, Bootcamp and Muscle Works class

Thursday, April 24th: 5 miles running, Barre fitness class

Friday, April 25th: Rest Day

Saturday, April 26th: Rest Day

Sunday, April 27th: Nike DC Half, 13.1 miles running

Total: 31.3 miles running

I am taking today off of running to relax from the busy weekend, but I will be back at it tomorrow with a 7 mile run. Now that I am focusing all my training on the marathon, the weekly miles are only going to continue to rise! This week I have 41 miles scheduled, including a 16 mile run on Sunday which will be my longest run so far.

One More Day of Work Until DC!

1 more work day and we’re off!

This time tomorrow, we’ll all be on our way to either the airport, in the air or finally on land in Washington, DC to enjoy our Nike Women’s Half Marathon weekend!

So to say we are all excited (it’s not only Lauren and I, but Lauren’s friend Phu is also running in the race and experiencing the sister fun weekend :)) is an understatement. During last year’s Nike Women’s Half Marathon in Washington DC, I was still a fairly new runner. I had done 2 8ks and was preparing for my first 10 miler run. The swag looked amazing, but I really didn’t think anything of it.

When Lauren and I made the decision to enter the lottery for the race, I only had 2 half marathons under my belt and had yet to travel farther than St. Louis for a big run. Fast forward and I’ve run 4 half marathons and I’ve done the racecation already too. We’ve been super excited since we got in and it’s all I’ve been thinking about lately! This week, work has really been crazy, so everyday I think, I’m one more day closer to DC!

So what is the plan for when we’re in DC… here are some of the things we’ll be up to:

-Hitting up Nike Georgetown for Official Nike Women’s Half Marathon Gear:
o Unlike Lauren, I am taking my chances to get the merchandise at the store when we get t want to order something and then have to worry about returning it.

-Go to the Expotique:
o This is where we will get our bibs, corral assignments, and the participant tech shirt.but instead focuses on the women.. there will be makeup, hair, and other girly things. My friend Brandon is joining us.. so it should be an experience for him!

-Go to DC Cupcakes:
o It take much convincing that we should go there. Lauren could care less about fancy cupcakes but I love them!

-Visit the National Zoo:
o This was Phu’s only request of the trip. She wanted to go to the National Zoo to see the pandas. She could care less about any of the other animals, but she really wants to see the pandas. I think she is hoping to catch a glimpse of Bao Bao!

-Visit the Holocaust Museum:
o Lauren and Phu have never been and it was a special request by Lauren. I went my last time I was in Washington, DC and it was an incredibly moving experience.

-Go to Shake Shack after the race:
o I ate at Shake Shack in NYC and I thought it was amazing! Needless to say, burgers and shakes are the best things to eat after burning 1500+ calories, so I think we’ll have earned it 🙂

-Visit with DC Friends!
o I actually know quite a few people who live in Washington DC!

-We will be having dinner with Kathryn (dancingtorunning.com) while we are in town. Kathryn was one of my friends in high school and jumped into the running scene last year and completed her first half marathon this past January in Disney World!

-We will be spending time with lots of my Circle K friends (Circle K is a collegiate service organization). From dinners to lunches, I’m looking forward to seeing my friends whom I haven’t seen in awhile!!

-We will also be going to a blogger luncheon on Saturday. We are quite excited about that one!! I need to work on our business cards tomorrow…haha

We’ll try and post some pictures tomorrow… otherwise, we’ll be back on Monday with a full week of DC madness (weekly recaps x2, expo/merchandise review, and race reviews x2)!

We’re Running DC!

This will be my last post before DC, so I figured I would talk more about DC in case I haven’t expressed my excitement about the race enough already….

But really, I have been looking forward to this race for months. I’m sorry if I have been annoying at all with all my posts on the race. But I have been training the hardest I ever have in my life, and I’m just so happy that it is finally here! This is the first time I have traveled for a race, not including Chicago (which I don’t really consider traveling since it is fairly close and I go there frequently). And it is Nike, the ultimate sports brand in my opinion. And ok….the Tiffany’s necklace at the end doesn’t hurt either.

We will be flying in Friday morning and will be going to the Nike Half Marathon Expotique after we meet up with each other at the airport (Kathleen and my friend Phu are flying in from Chicago, I am flying in from St. Louis). The packet pickup is located at the Expotique, but everything else there is not like your normal race expo. There is nothing for sale but it has everything that most women would love – makeup stations, hair makeovers, massages, free samples of beauty products, etc! I read a bunch of reviews about the Expotique from last year, and if this year’s is anything like that, then I cannot wait!

After exploring the Expotique, we will head to the Nike Georgetown store where we will buy some merchandise to remember the race from. I bought the sweatshirt pictured below online already, because I was afraid they would not have my size when we got there and I really liked it! I’m also hoping to get a water bottle with the Nike Half logo on it, a tank top with the logo, and possibly some shorts. I’m sure I will want to get other things too, but I can’t spend too much money on merchandise because we also have to pay for all the meals, and I’m sure other things, while we are there!

20140422-215922.jpg

I believe that Kathleen will be touching upon some of the other things that we will be doing in DC, so I will save that for her post tomorrow.

My main goal for the race is to PR, just like it is in every race. I’m a little worried that it might be hard to achieve this goal, just because I had a really strong time in my last half-marathon, and frankly, it will be hard for me to beat. I’ve been having some great times lately, but I am worried that I won’t be able to sustain that pace for all 13.1 miles, especially when I am unfamiliar with the course. But even if I can do 1 second better, I would be satisfied.

My ultimate goal is to have a time under 2 hours. After looking at a pace chart, this will be challenging. I will have to maintain an average pace of 9:09/mile which would give me 1:59:57 half marathon time. I know that I am capable of doing this, but we will just have to wait and see if it will happen on Sunday.

I am also excited about this race finally being here, because come Sunday afternoon, I will transition to training for my first ever marathon that is coming up in June. For the past few months, I have been using the intermediate training plan that Nike put out specifically for this race. This training plan worked out very well with the marathon training plan I will be using, and it will be an easy transition from this plan to the next (the Sunday of this half I was scheduled for a 14 mile run on the marathon plan, and next Sunday it will be a 16 mile run). It’s crazy to think that my training is only going to get more intense from here on out, but I am definitely anxious and looking forward to the challenge that the next few months will present me!

Live Well STL

logo

Recently, I was messaged on Twitter by a local non-profit organization in St. Louis, Live Well STL. Live Well STL is part of the Midwest Health Initiative, which is a regional healthcare improvement organization. I had followed them on Twitter because I am of course interested in living a healthy life and wanted to be informed about any health or fitness related activities in the St. Louis area.

So, I received a message from them about a month ago, encouraging me to check out their new site that they were launching – LiveWellSTL . I’ve been so busy that I hadn’t really looked into it until yesterday, but I’m very glad I remembered to check it out because it will be very useful to me in the future!

The site is all about connecting you to available options for Physical Activity, Weight Loss, Healthy Eating, and Health Education in the St. Louis area. There are tons of different activities listed, but you can narrow down the options shown to you by: selecting your price range, preferred day of the week, time of day, type of activity, whether or not a membership is required, and if you have to register or RSVP ahead of time.

The Physical Activity section displays a wide array of options for clubs and leagues, group fitness classes, personal trainers, parks and trails, fitness camps, and basically any type of fitness activity your heart would desire. I am most interested in this section, and really like that you can narrow down the choices to fit your needs. I also like seeing all the parks available in the area, because I definitely need to switch up my running routes so that I don’t get bored!

The Healthy Eating portion of the website is also very cool. It shows you where in the area fresh produce is available, cooking and nutrition classes, and nutrition counseling. The one thing I thought could be improved in this section was the Fresh Produce results. They basically had a big list of Schnuck’s (grocery store) and Aldi locations. I thought it would be nice if there could be a list of all the farmers markets in the area with their hours and dates. There are SO many farmers markets in St. Louis and since I am relatively new to town, it would be nice to have a big, collective listing of all in the area.

The Weight Loss section had information about about Medical or Clinical programs, Coaching, Nutrition Classes, and Support Groups. The Health Education section had programs such as: Disease and Medication Management, Nutrition, Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Kids, and Stress Relief.

This site will be a very helpful resource for St. Louisian’s looking for health and fitness related activities. It is very easy to navigate, has numerous options as well as a wide variety of options, and organizations can list their events for free on the site.

I will definitely use it for the future when I am looking for new health related options.  I realize that many of you are not from the St. Louis area, but I think this is a great idea for any city to adapt. Does your city have a site like this where you can go to one place to find the health and fitness events/classes/races/etc. in your area?

Thank you so much for Live Well STL for letting me know about this great site, and for developing it to help all people in the St. Louis area get healthier and fitter!

Weekly Recap – Kathleen

Monday, April 14th: Yoga Class (75 minute class)

Tuesday, April 15th: 5 miles running (10:36 pace)

Wednesday, April 16th: 5 miles running (10:43 pace)

Thursday, April 17th: Rest Day

Friday, April 18th: 10 miles running (10:44 pace)

Saturday, April 19th: Rest Day

Sunday, April 20th: Rest Day

Unfortunately, all of my runs this week were on the treadmill because I didn’t get a chance to do my runs during the day.  Since it’s unsafe to do a 10 mile run outside at 9 pm at night, my gym membership comes in handy.  I’m hoping that my final 2 runs will be outdoors on Wednesday and Thursday, even though I have about a million things to do at work :*(

In better news, I only have 3 more work days until we leave for Washington DC!  I remember when Lauren texted me on my way home from the gym in December telling me she had got an email that we were selected for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in Washington DC.  I remember being puzzled at first because we found out a few days earlier than we were suppose to, but it was a good surprise of course.  I got our hotel reservations right away and the flights figured out as well.  I’m a little sad knowing that this is my last race-cation (involving a flight) until January… but I need to save my money so I can make sure that one is a good one too 🙂

3 days until we leave and 5 until race day!

Weekly Recap, DC, Thinking of Boston

This past week was my taper week, and I’m happy to report it went very smoothly! Here was a quick recap:

Monday, April 14th: Rest

Tuesday, April 15th: 4 miles running, Barre exercise class

Wednesday, April 16th: 2.36 miles running, Muscle Works exercise class

Thursday, April 17th: 4 miles running, Barre exercise class

Friday, April 18th: 5 miles running

Saturday, April 19th: 10 miles running

Total: 25.4 miles running, 3 exercise classes

My favorite parts of the week were getting in some really awesome training runs timing-wise and starting my group fitness classes. I have done yoga classes before, but never really done a regular group fitness class, so I was a bit nervous to start. But since they are included in my gym membership, (and since I won’t be using the gym as much since it is getting nice enough to run outside regularly), I figured I should take full advantage of them. And I’m so glad I made this decision! The teachers have been very helpful and the workouts are a real challenge – I felt the burn even a few days later. I will be adding another one this week – 6AM Boot Camp class on Wednesdays! I am very happy to be including these workouts in my routine. Justin thinks I am getting addicted, but there are much worse things I could be obsessed with, so I’m not too worried! 🙂

And now I am, of course, filled with excitement about the week ahead and traveling to DC for the Nike Half! When we first got confirmation that we were in the race it seemed like it would take forever to get here. But it is less than a week away and it now it seems like yesterday that we got the email saying we were in.

This week, I still have some training runs, but obviously not as hard or intense so that my legs will be rested and ready to run my best come Sunday.

Today, as I’m sure all of you know, is the Boston Marathon. I hope that all the runners have a great time and get some PR’s. I hope one day (far ahead in the future when I am a much faster runner!) that I will be able to qualify and run in the Boston Marathon.

I watched a Dateline special the other night about the tragedy from last year, and while there was parts about the bombers and the overall investigation, the most touching part was hearing from some of the survivors. There were two people that had both lost their legs, and I was so amazed how strong both of them were. It has been only a year since their lives have been so dramatically changed, yet they were able to tell their stories confidently and both of them have made amazing progress. I will definitely be thinking of them and the rest of the survivors today during my run.

Also, Nike is doing something really cool to support Boston. You can follow these simple instructions to help out the Challenged Athletes Foundation:

Your miles matter. On 4.21, join us as we rally behind the city and people of Boston.

Here’s how:

Run with the Nike+ Running App and tag #strongereveryrun in the notes. We’ll give $1 for every mile you run to the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

#justdoit

I hope everyone has a great Monday! 🙂 Hopefully you have some time to get outside and run some miles for Boston!

My New Favorite Thing

A2094

So I mentioned this product the other day in a post, but I felt the need to expand on the love on my new favorite thing – Spark Energy Drink from Advocare! I have been taking it now for a week, and I can already say I am hooked!

I take the Spark with 8 ounces of water before my workouts. Before I started using Spark, I might drink some water, Gatorade, or many times just nothing at all. But since I have no caffeine in my diet now that I have cut out soda and have never been a coffee drinker, I was definitely lacking the energy to really give it my all during my workouts. The past week though since I started drinking it, I have noticed SUCH a change in my workouts. During my runs I am not getting as tired, and for my other cross-training activities I have so much more endurance and energy. My runs have all been so much faster as well, which I would directly correlate to my use of Spark.

The benefits, as listed on the Advocare website, include:

  • Enhances mental energy and focus

  • Provides support for long-lasting energy

  • Helps fight occasional drowsiness

  • 21 vitamins, minerals and nutrients

  • Sugar-free and only 45 calories

  • Helps reduce free radicals

The price for a canister is a little high, but the results are definitely worth the price. And if you are used to spending money every day on coffee or other energy drinks, then it isn’t that high at all. I would definitely recommend this product to everyone and I am really happy with the results I have had so far. I have also been using Rehydrate drink from Advocare after my runs, and it tastes great and works well also.

(I want to also express that I was not paid to endorse this product, I do not work for Advocare, I just really love it and felt the need to let others know about it! 🙂 )

Midweek Ramblings

Just a couple of random running rambles for the week!!

1—Yesterday, I completed a 5 mile run.  Unfortunately, we got snow (yes, you read that right) on Monday evening, so I was forced to do my run indoors on the treadmill on Tuesday evening (my schedule was jam packed during the day).  During the run, there was a special on ESPN2 about the Boston Marathon.  Yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of the bombings at the Boston Marathon.  1 year ago, I was still a pretty newbie runner (I still think of myself as a newbie still even with 4 halfs under my belt!) and the way the running community responded was absolutely amazing.  My foot was bothering me but watching the stories and hearing about people surviving without limbs and preserving on, I knew that something was up with my foot but I fought thru the pain.  After the run, I discovered that my sock had come down on my foot, so my foot was unprotected from the back of my shoe.  Here is what it looked like!

photo 1-3

unnamed

Needless to say, the trip that my mom and I have already planned to the running store to buy some more new socks on Saturday will be well worth it!!

2—Chicago Marathon lottery results came out on Monday.  While I did not register for the lottery, I am very jealous of all who did!!  Since I’m running a half marathon in Detroit the week after Chicago, I knew there was no way that I would be able to run Chicago even if I wanted to.   I won the running lottery for the Nike Women’s Half in DC in December and I truly felt like I did win the lottery by getting selected.  If I make it thru Disney in January, I will definitely be entering the lottery for Chicago Marathon 2015.

3—Only 11 days until my 5th Half Marathon and 9 days until we get to Washington DC!  Lauren, her friend Phu, and I have a jam packed schedule for our 3 day trip to the nation’s capital.  From going to a few DC destinations, eating at some fun places, and running in the race, we will be constantly on the go!!  I’ll share more about our plans in a post next week!
